Architecture The art or practice of designing and constructing buildings. The Forbidden City is a world-renowned example of wooden architecture.
Calligraphy The art of decorative handwriting. In imperial China, calligraphy was considered one of the highest forms of art.
Concubine A woman of the court who was a secondary wife to the Emperor, ranked within a strict hierarchy.

Dynasty A sequence of rulers from the same family. The Forbidden City served the Ming and Qing dynasties.
Eunuch Men who worked as servants and high-ranking officials within the Inner Court. They were often very powerful.
Kowtow The act of kneeling and touching one's head to the ground as a sign of deep respect to the Emperor.
Mandate of Heaven The belief that the Emperor was chosen by divine powers to rule fairly over the people.

Palanquin A covered litter (chair) carried on poles by servants, used to transport the Emperor or Empress.
Vermilion A brilliant red color used exclusively for the walls of the palace and the Emperor's personal ink.
Wenshou The traditional ceramic statues placed on the corners of roofs for protection and decoration.
